Teuber's original design was for a large game of exploration and development in a new land. Having played the most knights also earns the player victory points. Three types of development cards include cards worth one victory point knight cards (or soldier cards), which allow the player to move the robber and a third set of cards which allow the player one of several abilities when played. Resource cards can also be spent to buy a development card. Various other achievements, such as establishing the longest road, grant a player additional victory points. Players possess one point for each settlement built, and a second for each settlement upgraded to a city. The goal of the game is to possess ten victory points on one's turn. By building settlements in certain spots on the board (ports), players may trade at better ratios. Players are allowed to trade resource cards among each other if they choose to players may also trade off-island (in effect, with the non-player bank) at ratio of four of one resource for one of any other. This is one of many Settlers of Catan custom extra-large boards seen during demonstrations and tournaments at Gen Con. There is also a robber token on the board if a player rolls 7, they move the robber to any hex, which will no longer produce resources until the robber is moved again they also steal a resource card from another player.įile:Gen Con - 20030724 - Giant Settlers of Catan Game.jpgĪ giant game of Settlers being played Gen Con Indy 2003. Any players with settlements or cities adjacent to hexes marked with the number rolled receive resource cards of the appropriate type. On each player's turn, they roll the two dice, determining which hexes produce resources. Players build by spending resources (brick, lumber, wool, grain, and ore), represented by resource cards each land type produces a specific resource. The game board representing the island is composed of hexagonal tiles ( hexes) of different land types which are laid out randomly at the beginning of each game. If you like challenging board games and strategy, this will be one of your favorites, especially if you are looking for a game that can be played differently every time.īraeden Will lives near Greenwood, Arkansas, and loves to read, figure out new board games, ride his bike, and play in the creek outside. “Settlers of Catan” is also unique because the board has interchangeable pieces that make it an entirely new game each time you play. In the popular game “Risk” you can conquer someone else’s army and get their land, but in “Settlers of Catan” the motto is “finders keepers, losers weepers.” If you build a settlement, no one can take it from you. “Settlers” is more about making settlements and not just about laying train tracks.
“Settlers of Catan” is similar to the game “Ticket to Ride,” because both of the boards change every time you play.
You win the game by gaining 10 victory points. If someone rolls a seven then they get to move the robber on to someone else’s resource hexagon, robbing them of that resource until someone moves the robber again. If you roll a seven with the dice, anybody who has more than seven resource cards will have to discard half of their cards but if you have an odd number of cards, say nine, you would have to discard four not five. A development card gives you an advantage in the game. A road is a little wooden strip that you place on the board.
A resource card is what you draw if a certain number gets rolled.
